  • Where can I register for the race?

    Online at www.sowetomarathon.com through the secure electronic payment system on the registration platform using your MasterCard or Visa credit card or via EFT. You can also register at the below locations and pay cash:

  • How much does it cost to enter

    R220 for the half marathonR220 for the half marathon20 for the half marathonbbbmnbbnbathon
    Price is per entrant and is inclusive of VAT.
    There are price variations based on students, Grand Masters, International and Rest of Africa entrants.

  • Can I enter by Fax or Email and deposit the Entry Free into a Bank Account?

    No - only online entries are accepted and payment via Mastercard, Visa cards or via EFT at www.sowetomarathon.com or cash payment entries at the stores listed above.

  • I did not complete my Online Registration, and when I try again it says I have already entered? What do I do?

    Shut down your internet browser completely and start again at www.sowetomarathon.com

  • I'm unable to proceed on the Online Entry System

    Ensure you have answered all the compulsory fields. A green tick next to the fields indicate it is complete. Any red crosses next to a field means it is not completed - go back and fill in the fields required. Also tick the "Terms and Conditions" box to move to the next screen.

  • Why do I need an ASA License Number?

    ASA is the governing body of athletics in South Africa and all provinces are affiliated members of the ASA. This affirms that the ASA is the authority who issues these ASA licenses to all provincial members, including each province's affiliated athletes. For more information click here.

  • Can I run the 42.2km (Marathon) with a Temp License?

    Yes, it is now possible and a Temporary License must be purchased with your entry.

  • How many runners can participate per race distance?

    42.2km – 15 000 Runners21.1km –15 000 Runners10km – 10 000 Runners

  • Do you have a Student discount?

    Yes, student pricing as follows: R250 Marathon, R180 half marathon and R150 for 10 km per entrant and is inclusive of VAT. (Student Card or letter from school and ID are required)

  • When does registration close?

    Closing date for registrations is Midnight 31st July 2019 or once each distance has reached its capacity (whichever comes first)

  • What payment methods are available?

    Payment of the entry fee can be made in the following ways:
    Online through the secure electronic payment system on the registration   platform using your MasterCard, Visa credit card or via EFT;

    Buying a voucher does not secure your place in the race. Full registration needs to be completed first in order to secure entry.

  • What if I forget my Student Card at home when I collect my race pack?

    The full race fee will apply unless a valid Student Card or Letter from School and ID are produced at race pack collection.

  • Where can I collect my race pack?

    Race pack collection takes place from 31.10.2019 to 02.11.2019
    Thurs - Fri 10:00 - 20:30 / Sat 08:30 - 20:30
    FNB Stadium, Gate D, Johannesburg, South Africa

  • What must I bring with me to collect my race pack?

    ID, Driver’s License or Passport
    Your ChampionChip
    Confirmation of registration email
    Student Card or Letter from School (if applicable)
    If you are under 18, please bring the indemnity form that has been signed by your parent or guardian.

  • Can someone collect my race pack on my behalf if I am not able to?

    Yes, simply print and complete the Letter of Authorisation to enable someone to collect on your behalf. Don’t forget to ensure that the person collecting the race pack on your behalf must bring:

    ID, Driver’s License or Passport
    Your ChampionChip
    Confirmation of registration email
    Student Card or Letter from School (if applicable)
    They must also show their own ID, Driver’s License or Passport and registration confirmation email in order to collect the race pack

  • What if I miss the prescribed race pack collection times and don't manage to fetch my race pack, can I collect the race pack on race day?

    There will be no race pack collections on or after race day

    Race packs can only be collected at the prescribed race collection times:

  • Can anyone participate in the race?

    The following age requirements apply for the race:
    42km – 20years
    21km – 16years
    10km – 15years

    We regret no wheelchair athletes due to the route layout

    No blade, cyclist or mechanically operated device allowed in the race

    If you are younger than 18 (on the day of the race) you will need to have your parent or guardian to complete the waiver form and bring it along when you collect your race pack, without this we will not be able to release your race pack to you.

  • Will the race be safe?

    Yes, with the City of Johannesburg as our official partner, we will have a strong contingent of police, traffic officers, and marshalls at the start, finish and throughout the route

  • What happens if it rains?

    The race will continue in adverse weather conditions unless the safety officer deems it unsafe to continue. There are no refunds whatsoever.

  • I am a Licensed runner registered to a Running Club, can I wear my Club colours and display my License Number?

    Yes, you can run in your Club colours

  • Where can I leave my belongings?

    There will be a dedicated tog bag area available for runners to secure their personal belongings

  • How will the Race timing work?

    Race timing will be done via the ChampionChip race timing chip. Runners must use their own chip for the 42.2km, 21.1km and 10km runs. If they don’t own a chip they will be given the option to buy one or hire one before the race.

  • What is a ChampionChip?

    ChampionChip is the official timing race chip for the Soweto Marathon. It is the same chip used for Comrades Marathon, DisChem 21, Om Die Dam, Mandela Marathon or any ChampionChip timed event. A ChampionChip must be worn in order to participate in the Old Mutual Soweto Marathon.

  • Can I use the same Timing Chip from the Two Oceans Marathon?

    No, it will not work at the Soweto Marathon. Only the ChampionChip will work - it is the same chip used at Comrades Marathon. If you wear any other chips you will not receive a finishing time.

  • I see there are two options on the Online Entry - what is the difference between a hired ChampionChip or a Purchased ChampionChip?

    You may purchase a permanent ChampionChip for R150 and it will be registered in your name and you can wear it at any ChampionChip timed event in the future. To hire one it costs R50, and it can only be used once, at the Soweto Marathon only, and you will return it at the finish line.

  • ChampionChip Information

    This event is being timed with the ChampionChip® system and therefore you are required to own a ChampionChip® to participate in the event. To ensure that you are accurately recorded in the Race Results it is important that you are in possession of your ChampionChip® that is correctly registered in your name. If you do not currently have a ChampionChip® or want to verify that it is correctly registered, this can be done on the Internet at www.championchip.co.za or by contacting ChampionChip® Africa on 0861 100 963. Your ChampionChip® code must be entered on this entry form. Your ChampionChip® MUST be correctly attached to your shoelaces. For correct attachment instructions, please visit www.championchip.co.za. No corrections or manual updates will be done due to incorrect use of the ChampionChip® or not abiding by the race rules. No prizes will be awarded to athletes not competing with their ChampionChip®.

  • Can I park anywhere?

    Parking will be provided at FNB Stadium. Please note that parking is at your own risk. The Soweto Marathon may not be held responsible for theft or damage to any vehicle and its contents

  • What time should I be at the start by?

    We recommend getting there as early as possible as we expect the traffic to be heavy. Runners must be ready and in the start pens an hour before their designated race start time

  • What happens if I am late for the start?

    If you are not in your designated starting pen by the time the gun goes off, you will not be able to run:
    42.2km – 05h30
    21.1km – 06h30
    10km – 07h00

  • What sites to expect on route?

    The marathon route will take runners through Soweto’s historical & cultural landmarks including:

    Vilakazi Street
    Hector Peterson Memorial
    Morris Isaacson School
    Oppenheimer Memorial
    Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s current home
    Jabulani Hostels

  • Will there be toilets at the start, on route and at the finish?

    Yes, toilets will be available

  • Will there be hydration stations?

    Yes, every 3 kilometers.

  • Can my family and friends come watch?

    Yes, they are welcome to come and watch you run. Spectators will also be able to track the race live using the UltimateLive timing App

  • Can my family / friends bring a cooler box, food or drink into the venue?

    No, unfortunately not. There will be food and refreshments on sale.

    No club gazebo's will be allowed in the stadium and a statement will be made available soon on stand allocation/booking within the stadium.

    No open fires or gas cylinders will be allowed in the stadium

  • Will there be food and refreshments available on sale at FNB Stadium?

    Yes, there will be vendors selling food and refreshments.

  • Will there be Paramedic Services available on the day?

    There will be a rapid response vehicle and medical personnel at the start, finish and along the route.

  • What happens if I don't have Medical Aid and something happens to me?

    You will be seen to by the emergency services personnel on the day and if the need arises will be stabilized and taken to the nearest government hospital, where any expenses for your care will be for your account.

  • What happens if I get injured along the route and am not able to finish the race?

    There will be a medical van that will be sweeping the route and will pick you up and return you to the finish where you will receive the appropriate care.

  • What are the cut-off times for the race?

    Each runner will need to complete the Soweto Marathon within 6 hours, the 21km within 3½ hours and the 10km within 2 hours. In addition , for the runner's safety, a half way cut-off at 21km's of 3hrs 20mins will be enforced on the marathon route.

  • Will there be any cars behind the runners?

    Sweeper vehicles will follow the back runners

  • What if I register and then become injured or unable to attend the race?

    Unfortunately your race entry is non-refundable. There are no refunds for cancelled entries. There will be a substitution, upgrade + downgrade window period for selected distances from 1st September to 30th September 2019. Further details to follow.

  • Does my Entrance Fee include a Race T-Shirt?

    Yes, each race participant will receive a free commemorative t-shirt with their race pack

  • Where can I find my Race results?

    Live race results will be available on race day via the ChampionChip Africa website

  • Will I get a medal?

    Yes, all participants who finish the race within the specified cut off times will receive a race medal.
