Online entry fees: R380 for the marathon, R300 for the half marathon and R280 for the 10km per entrant and is inclusive of VAT. These prices are exclusive of online transaction fee’s.

The African Bank Soweto Marathon is run in accordance with the rules of Athletics South Africa and Central Gauteng Athletics. The Rules for Road Races in Central Gauteng Athletics requires athletes to wear their 2023 license number on the back and front.

When the entry limits have been reached.

2nd – 4th November 2023 from FNB Stadium. Your final race number confirmation will advise on final collections details. NO race packs/numbers can be collected on race morning or after the event.

ID, Driver’s License or Passport and race number confirmation mailer.

Yes, you must provide a Letter of Authorisation to enable someone to collect on your behalf. Don’t forget to ensure that the person collecting the race pack on your behalf must also bring a copy of your ID, Driver’s License or Passport and your race number confirmation mailer.

There will be no race pack collections on or after race day!

The following age requirements apply for the race:

  • 42.2km – 20years
  • 21.1km – 16years
  • 10km – 15years

Regret no wheelchair athletes due to the route layout. No blade, cyclist or mechanically operated device allowed in the race.

Yes, with the City of Johannesburg as a partner, we will have a strong contingent of Police, Traffic Officers, and Marshalls at the start, finish and throughout the route

We will still run.

Yes you may run in your club colours with your license number displayed. Running club members running with a temporary license may also run in their club colours.

There will be a dedicated tog bag area available for runners to secure their personal belongings.

The event is being timed by Peak Timing and your race number will have a disposable chip attached. Please DO NOT remove this chip, damage or bend/fold your race number. You must ensure you start in the correct distance and cross all timing mats.

Parking will be provided at FNB Stadium & surrounds – please park in designated areas..  Please note that parking is at your own risk. African Bank Soweto Marathon may not be held responsible for theft or damage to any vehicle and its contents.

We recommend getting there as early as possible as we expect the traffic to be heavy. Runners must be ready and in the start pens an hour before their designated race start time.

If you are not in your designated starting pen by the time the gun goes off, you will not be able to run:

  • 42.2km – 05h30
  • 21.1km – 06h30
  • 10km – 07h30

The marathon route will take runners through Soweto’s historical & cultural landmarks including the Walter Sisulu Square, Kliptown, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Vilakazi Street, Hector Peterson Memorial, Morris Isaacson School, Oppenheimer Memorial, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s current home and the Jabulani Hostels.

Yes toilets will be available.

Yes, they are welcome to come and watch you run.

Yes, there will be vendors selling food and refreshments.

There will be a rapid response vehicle and medical personnel at the start, finish and along the route.

You will be seen to by the emergency services personnel on the day and if the need arises will be stabilized and taken to the nearest government hospital, where any expenses for your care will be for your account.

There will be a medical van that will be sweeping the route and will pick you up and return you to the finish where you will receive the appropriate care.

Each runner will need to complete the African Bank Soweto Marathon within 6 hours, the 21km within 3½ hours and the 10km within 2hours. In addition, for the runners’ safety, a half-way cut off will be enforced on the Marathon route at 21.1km at 3hrs, 20mins.

Sweeper vehicles will follow the back runners.

Unfortunately your race entry is non-refundable. There are no refunds for canceled entries. There is also no ability to transfer entry fees to any other race.

Yes, each race participant will receive a free commemorative t-shirt with their race pack
