Press Release
Runners still wanting to participate in the 10km, 21km or 42km races on 5 November during the African Bank Soweto Marathon are now able to register until midnight on the 12th October 2014. The registration date originally scheduled for Wednesday 1 October was moved out to allow athletes more time given the influx of requests in the last week of September.
“We felt that it was important to make sure all athletes had an opportunity to enter the African Bank Soweto Marathon, as such we carefully monitored online and manual registrations during the last week of September and took the decision to extend the registration date,” commented 2023 Race Director and Soweto Marathon Trust CEO Banele Sindani.
Sindani went on to add that given the busy running calendar many athletes were not able to register for the race before as they needed to determine their fitness level and ensure all injuries were dealt with. “Given that this is a race for the people we felt it important to try to accommodate as many requests from athletes wanting to take part in the 2023 race.”
Organisers of the event reiterated that all logistics for the event are well underway and that runners should remember to collect their race packs between 30 October and 1 November from Constitutional Hill. The heritage site is recognised as the seventh important site to be added to this year’s Nike Soweto Marathon, which is focused on highlighting the rich history of Soweto, but also celebrating 20 years of Freedom.
Athletes should note that they can still register in-store at the Nike Stores at Sandton City and The Zone in Rosebank, as well as the Orlando Community Centre in Soweto, Run-aWay Store in Pretoria and The Sweat Shops in both Johannesburg and Pretoria. Alternatively runners can register via www.sowetomarathon.com.
